Why YouTube Doesn't Let You Sort by Oldest

YouTube's comment section offers two sorting options: "Top comments" and "Newest first." However, there's no built-in way to sort comments by oldest first. This makes it nearly impossible to find the first comment on popular videos with thousands of comments.

Our tool uses the YouTube Data API to fetch recent top-level comments, then sorts that sample oldest first. The search limit means earlier comments on larger videos may be outside the sample.

We fetch up to 1,000 comments for logged-out users, or 2,000 comments for logged-in users. If the video has more comments, its actual first comment may be outside the sample. Deleted or unavailable comments cannot be recovered.
Does the First Comment Finder support YouTube Shorts?
Yes! The First Comment Finder supports both standard YouTube videos and YouTube Shorts. Simply paste the URL of any public YouTube video or Short.
Can I find the first comment on private or unlisted videos?
Unlisted videos work: paste the video link and the tool reads comments normally. Private videos don't, because YouTube removes the comment section from private videos entirely, so there are no comments to retrieve.
Are deleted comments included in the results?
No, deleted comments are not accessible through the YouTube Data API. The First Comment Finder shows the oldest available comment within the fetched sample.
