YouTube Studio vs a Comment Tool: When Studio Is Enough

Most YouTube comment sections never need a paid tool. YouTube Studio is free, it is where your comments actually live, and it has improved a lot: AI reply suggestions in your tone, search by meaning, comment summaries, a single held queue and two kinds of moderators. Short answer. Studio is enough when you can read your comments yourself, you want to write your own replies, and Basic or Strict holding plus blocked words keep spam under control. A comment tool earns its place when the same questions arrive every day, the held queue grows faster than you clear it, scams slip past your word list, or you need things to happen while you are away. Studio suggests replies; it never sends one for you.

What YouTube Studio does well in 2026

Moderation settings and the held queue

Per YouTube's comment settings guide, each video's comments can be On, Paused (existing comments stay, no new ones) or Off. When they are on, you choose None, Basic (holds potentially inappropriate comments), Strict (holds a broader range) or Hold all, and you can limit commenting to subscribers and members with a minimum subscription time. Held comments stay in Studio for up to 60 days, aren't public unless you approve them, and can be reviewed in over 100 languages. Since YouTube merged Likely spam into the Held tab, it is one queue.

Around that sit channel-wide filters: a blocked words list that holds comments containing or closely matching your terms, link blocking, hidden users whose comments disappear from your channel, and approved users who skip the filters. Reply suggestions, including AI ones in your tone

Studio offers comment reply suggestions under comments in Studio, the YouTube app and the Studio app. Some are upgraded with AI to suggest replies in your own tone and style, based on comments you've made recently on your channel, in every language YouTube comments support. They are optional and editable, and they may not appear on every comment. The workflow is: find the comment, select a suggestion, edit it, click Reply.

Filters, search and summaries

Studio's Community page filters comments by search, questions, response status and more. On a computer, a search tool uses AI to find comments by topic or meaning as well as keywords ("questions about my equipment"), offers suggested topics, and has a Find similar comments option; topic matches cover the last 90 days and you can't search by commenter. Get summary gives an AI summary of how viewers responded to a video. In the Studio mobile app, suggested comments to heart lets you heart a batch of positive comments at once.

Moderators and channel permissions

You can add standard and managing moderators by channel URL or straight from a comment. Both kinds can hold comments for your review, and managing moderators have more options; moderators don't get access to your channel in Studio. For people who should work inside Studio, channel permissions give roles such as Manager, Editor and Viewer. When Studio alone is enough

• You can read every comment that matters. A daily or weekly pass with the Questions and response status filters gets you to the comments worth answering.
• You want to write your own replies. Reply suggestions speed you up, and the reply still comes from you.
• Spam is a trickle. Basic or Strict holding, a maintained blocked words list and link blocking catch most of it, and you clear the held queue in minutes.
• Help, if you have any, is moderation help. Moderators can hold comments for your review without access to your channel.
• Nothing needs to happen while you're away. If a purchase question can wait until tomorrow, there's no job for automation to do yet.

If all five are true, stay with Studio, and spend the money on your videos. Revisit when one of them stops being true.

Signs you have outgrown Studio

• The same questions every day. Where to buy, which gear, is there a discount: you are typing the same answer, and Studio can only suggest it, one comment at a time.
• The held queue outgrows you. Held comments wait for a person, and after 60 days they are gone from the queue whether you got to them or not.
• Scams change their spelling. Blocked words catch your list and close matches; impersonators rotate wording, handles and characters faster than you can update it.
• You need rules of your own. "If someone asks about the course, reply with the link; if it's a Telegram scam, delete it; if it's a refund request, email me." Studio has no way to say that.
• Comments matter while you're away. A buyer's question at 2am, a scam wave on a viral video, a launch weekend: Studio waits for you to log in.

What a comment tool adds on top of Studio

A comment tool doesn't replace Studio; your comments stay on YouTube and every reply posts as your channel through YouTube's official API.
