Short answer. The latest YouTube comment changes: GIF comments, announced on September 23, 2026, with image and GIF support reaching all users in November 2026; an opt-in test of personalized comment moderation that learns your style; and commenting by voice on TV. Earlier in 2026, channel guidelines went global (April), and Studio added search by topic or meaning and heart suggestions (March).

YouTube ships comment features in small steps: an experiment for a few creators, an expansion, then a line in the help center. That makes it hard to answer a simple question like "can Studio search my comments yet?" This page keeps one dated list of the changes that affect how creators read, answer and moderate comments on their own channel. Each entry links to YouTube's Creator updates page, YouTube Help, the official YouTube blog, the YouTube Data API changelog or a reputable report. Where YouTube documents a change without dating it, it goes in the last section rather than under a guessed date.

2026

September 30, 2026: Images and GIFs in comments reach the API, all users in November

The YouTube Data API's comment resource gained a field for the URL of an image or animated GIF attached to a comment, and the API revision history says the feature will be available to all users in November 2026. For creators, that means picture and GIF comments are coming to your comment section, and tools that read comments through the API can see the attachment.

September 23, 2026: GIF comments announced

At Made on YouTube, YouTube announced that commenters will be able to respond with GIFs, TechCrunch reported. Expect more non-text comments to review; your existing moderation settings still decide what is held.

September 23, 2026: Personalized comment moderation (opt-in test)

YouTube said it is testing opt-in AI-powered comment moderation that learns your moderation style and needs over time, shaping a comment section that reflects your community. TechCrunch described it as an experiment without technical details. It is a test, not a setting every channel has; until it reaches you, Basic, Strict and blocked words are the built-in filters. Our guide to moderating YouTube comments covers those.

September 23, 2026: Comment by voice from a TV

Viewers watching on a TV will be able to post comments by voice without switching to another device, per YouTube's announcement. If much of your audience watches on TV, expect more comments from there.

April 2026: Channel guidelines available globally

Creators everywhere can now set up to three channel guidelines that viewers see across comments, live chat and Community posts, per YouTube's Creator updates. YouTube Help notes the guidelines set expectations but are not enforced automatically.

March 2026: Search comments by topic or meaning in Studio

Studio gained a search tool that finds comments by topic or meaning as well as keywords, with suggested topics and a Find similar comments option, per the Creator updates page. YouTube Help says it works in Studio on a computer, covers the last 90 days for topic matches, and can't search for a specific commenter. It is the fastest way to find unanswered questions in your comments.

March 2026: Suggested comments to heart in the Studio app

The Studio mobile app now suggests recent comments with positive intent so you can heart them all at once, per YouTube Help. Social Media Today reported on March 31, 2026 that it was rolling out to all creators.

2025

November 18, 2025: AI reply suggestions expand to more channels

YouTube widened access to its AI comment reply suggestions, Social Media Today reported. Per YouTube Help, upgraded suggestions use AI to propose replies in your tone and style based on your recent replies; they are optional and editable, and you still send each one yourself. Our guide to auto replying to YouTube comments covers what to do when suggestions aren't enough.

November 13, 2025: Comment summaries tested in Studio

YouTube began an experiment with comment summaries in the Studio mobile app, reached by a Get summary button on a video's comments, Social Media Today reported. YouTube Help now documents Get summary in Studio on a computer as an AI summary of how viewers responded.

August 19, 2025: Select all comments for bulk actions

Studio removed the limit on how many comments you could select at once: creators can select all comments and remove or report them together. PPC Land reported, citing YouTube's Creator Insider announcement, that it began rolling out to all creators that week.

2024

October 15, 2024: AI reply suggestions in your own tone (experiment)

YouTube started testing AI-enhanced comment reply suggestions written in a creator's own tone and style, appearing in Studio and the YouTube mobile app for creators in the experiment, Social Media Today reported. This became the upgraded suggestions in the November 2025 entry above.

2023

December 8, 2023: Pause comments

Creators gained a Pause option that keeps existing comments visible while stopping new ones, rolling out to all creators, Engadget reported. YouTube Help now lists On, Pause and Off as the three comment settings for a video.

November 6, 2023: AI comment topics and summaries (experiment)

YouTube began testing a generative AI comments summarizer that groups discussion on videos with large comment sections into topics, TechCrunch reported. YouTube Help now describes comment topics: there is no opt-out, removing the comments under a topic removes the topic, and held comments, comments with blocked words and comments from hidden users are left out.

Documented by YouTube, date not announced

  • One held queue. YouTube merged the Held for review and Likely spam tabs in Studio; comments held automatically now wait in the combined Held tab for up to 60 days, with reported spam labeled Likely spam at the bottom (Manage spam in comments).
  • Subscribers and members only. With comments on, you can limit commenting on a video to subscribers and paid members, with a minimum subscription time of any duration, 1 hour, 1 day or 1 week (Learn about comment settings).

What these changes mean for running your comment section

The direction is clear: YouTube keeps adding AI that helps you read, sort and answer comments inside Studio, while you stay the one who sends each reply and clears the held queue. For many channels that is enough, and our guide to when YouTube Studio is enough sets out where the line falls. When it isn't, a tool can run rules on your own channel's comments through the official API; see YouTube comment management for how CommentShark does it, or the moderation tools roundup for the alternatives.
